Portrait

Portraiture became a major focus within LUAP’s Life Lines series, a three-year body of work developed through Photography, interviews and large-scale Painting. Each sitter was photographed with objects carrying personal significance, allowing individual histories, memories and private experiences to become part of the work.

The resulting Portraits combine highly realistic painted passages with areas of abstraction, allowing faces, bodies and surroundings to shift between precision and disruption. The realism is achieved entirely through Painting rather than photographic collage or printed image, creating a deliberate tension between what appears photographic and what is materially painted.

Across the series, portraiture becomes a way of exploring identity, resilience, vulnerability and self-perception, while the movement between realism and expressive mark-making gives the work its distinctive visual language.
