Finding Light in Darkness at Fortnum & Mason

Fortnum & Mason commissions LUAP to create Finding Light in Darkness for its Unleash the Love campaign, curated by Gone Rogue. The commission grows from LUAP’s recurring exploration of love, connection and the psychological movement between darkness and light.

Fortnum & Mason approached LUAP because love and human connection already run through much of his work. Rather than interpreting the brief through romance alone, Finding Light in Darkness looks at love as something that can offer support, direction and hope when life becomes difficult.

The composition is divided between two very different states. One side is dark and shadowed, while the other opens into white and light. The Pink Bear moves between them carrying flowers, creating a visual passage from one condition towards another rather than presenting darkness and light as separate worlds.

That transition connects with a recurring tension in LUAP’s practice. Psychological difficulty is rarely treated as something neatly overcome or left behind. Light and darkness can exist together, with moments of connection, memory and care creating points of orientation within more uncertain experiences.

As LUAP describes the work, The Pink Bear carries the flowers “as a beacon of life”, continuing forward despite the surrounding darkness.

Made from Paper, Acrylic, Aerosol, Glitter and Resin, the 168 × 123 cm work moves between photographic detail, painted surface and abstraction. The contrast between the darker and lighter halves is carried not only through the image but through shifts in texture, mark-making and material.

Installed in Fortnum & Mason’s Piccadilly windows, the commission places that imagery within one of London’s best-known luxury retail settings. The collaboration allows a work rooted in LUAP’s existing concerns around psychology and connection to operate at a public, architectural scale, encountered from the street as part of the building rather than within a conventional gallery.

Curated by Gone Rogue, Finding Light in Darkness forms part of Fortnum & Mason’s Unleash the Love campaign in 2024.
