LUAP creates Ethereal Blossom, a one-off motorcycle helmet developed from the materials and processes of Decadence, for the Helmets for Heroines auction in support of Breast Cancer Care.
Ethereal Blossom was created for Helmets for Heroines, a project bringing artists and designers together to customise motorcycle helmets and raise funds for Breast Cancer Care. The finished works will be auctioned at Karmarama in London in April 2014.
LUAP’s decision to take part was personal. His Nanna died from breast cancer, giving the project a connection beyond the object itself.
“I really wanted to get involved with this project as I lost my Nanna to breast cancer. I injected a huge amount of energy into it, with the hope that large amounts of money will be raised to help others.” LUAP
The helmet develops processes already being explored through Decadence. Layers of Acrylic and Aerosol are worked across its curved surface, carrying the series away from Painting and Print and onto a functional object.
Working on the helmet also required the imagery to respond to a very different form. Rather than a flat panel or sheet of paper, the surface wraps continuously around the object, changing how the pattern, marks and areas of colour meet one another.
Once completed, LUAP photographed Ethereal Blossom with Martina, extending the project into Photography before the work went to auction.
Helmets for Heroines brings together work by artists and designers in support of Breast Cancer Care while also celebrating women within motorcycle culture. Ethereal Blossom will be included in the London auction alongside the wider collection of customised helmets.
